The controversial felling of trees from the bridge in Virginia was done due to safety concerns. In February, Cavan County Council was given permission by the landowner to remove the trees which were beside the stone wall that is due to be reconstructed as part of the Virginia Town Scheme.
The wall has had a number of rocks fall from it and poses a risk to pedestrians, with the trees also creating a hazard.
The plans for the new stone wall, and the felling works were agreed in 2020, however, a number of members of the community were said to be disgruntled by the move.
Local councillor TP O'Reilly says that it was done in the interest of safety but perhaps there could have been greater communication with residents:
