A fundraising endeavour kicks off tomorrow in Cootehill in aid of the St Michael's Hall Redevelopment initiative. The Copper Coin Collection organised by Karl O'Brien will take place outside Super Value on Market Street from 12 to 2pm on Friday and Saturday of this weekend.
Bank of Ireland estimates there is over €1bn in copper coins in the country and the committee believes there's an opportunity now to access a share in that pot. Connie Whelan from from the redevelopment committee says the community in Cootehill is anxious to get proceedings under way.
She added how the centre has been at the heart of the Co Cavan town and its people for over 100 years. "There was a committee formed towards the latter half of last year with the aim of getting a lease on the hall; seek funding; and do fundraising to extend it.
"There is a preservation order on the existing hall and that won't be touched in any major way. The plan is to extend the hall itself for the wider community," said Connie.
