The Holy Family National School in Cootehill is being officially opened by the Minister for Education Norma Foley this morning.
The new 26 classroom purpose built facility has been in the pipeline for some time now and came to fruition as a result of lobbying and hard work by parents, local disability groups and politicians.
In 2017 the design process began and the sod at the site was subsequently turned in October 2018.
Deputy Niamh Smyth described today's event as "momentous".
The school will accommodate 183 pupils aged four to eighteen years from across counties Cavan and Monaghan.
Today's official opening of the Holy Family National School is a momentous day for everyone, in particular its beautiful students and wonderful staff," she added.
"This 26 classroom purpose built school has been long awaited.
"When I was first elected in 2016 it was the main issue being raised with me on the doors in Cootehill and further afield.
"Parents and disability groups has been lobbying hard and were knocking on doors for years but to no avail.
"As an opposition TD at the time, I made sure it was kept to the top of the agenda."
