Ruairí says it's important that false information online doesn't have a negative impact on minority groups.

A Co Cavan man has highlighted his concerns regarding false information, particularly on social media in the run up to the General Election. Ruairí McKiernan from Cootehill was recently selected to be the new Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Development Education Association. The association started 20 years ago to bring different organisations and individuals together that are involved in education with a "view of the world around us."

This includes issues such as gender, poverty, sustainability, human rights, peace and conflict and much more. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Ruairi believes that where there's war, conflict or forced migration in another country it can often have a ripple effect closer to home. Ruairí believes that although false information is being shared on social, it's important that this doesn't have a negative impact on minority groups. He explained; "What's going on at the moment, particularly on social media is a lot of false information being shared about the election, regardless of which party or background that you're from it's important to keep a degree of civility about this. It's important that we don't start turning on one another, and also particularly don't start turning on minority groups whether that be refugees, migrants or asylum seekers. That's why keeping a bigger picture is so important."
