A Cootehill author has won an international award for his memoir about hitchhiking around Ireland.
Ruairi McKiernan wrote "Hitching for Hope" on the back of time he spent travelling around the country, and listening to the people he met along the way.
President Michael D. Higgins was among those to praise the book after its launch a year ago, and McKiernan says this award is a boost to having the book's voices heard all over the world.
"Hitching for Hope" landed the top prize in the travel category of the Best Book Awards in the United States recently, beating off competition from Spain and Mexico.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Ruairi McKiernan said hope is something we should always have with us.
