Deputy Matt Carthy has once again called on the Minister for Justice to allow for an independent public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Shane O'Farrell.
On the evening of August 2nd , 2011, the 23-year-old was cycling home when he was struck by a car driven by Zigimantas Gridziuska near Carrickmacross in a hit and run incident.
The following day, the Lithuanian man surrendered himself to gardaí. However, the O’Farrell family feel he should never have been at liberty to kill Shane that night.
For 13 long years, Lucia and Jim O'Farrell have lived every parent's worst nightmare. In the summer of 2011, their beloved son, Shane, was left to die on the side of a Carrickmacross road and to this day they feel justice has not been served. Following a motion brought to the Dail in July, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she would write to the justice committee to ask it to look at the recommendations and conclusions of the scoping report.
The motion called on all TD's to support the calls for a public inquiry to be established. However, in response to a parliamentary question last week by Deputy Carthy it emerged she had not yet written to the committee. The local TD says he isn't surprised or shocked to be told that the Justice Minister has still not made contact with the justice committee.
