60% of construction companies are having difficulties recruiting tradespeople and machine operators. A new report published by the Banking and Payments Federation has highlighted how the issue may impact housing delivery.
The SME Monitor, found over 95% of all businesses which have fewer than 10 employees are experiencing skill gaps. BPFI CEO Brian Hayes says there's a recruitment problem in many small and medium enterprises.
"80% of people who work in the construction industry are represented by smaller businesses, so we are seeing not just an overall skills issue in terms of numbers but also a mismatch on those particular skills that are needed in key parts of the economy and that's reflected in the monitor," he explained.
