The Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim in Cavan underwent a major conservation, restoration and upgrade over an 18-week period recently. Carried out by Craft Studio Architecture in Monaghan, the Cathedral has seen an electrical and fire safety installation; and enhancement and comfort for occupants.
A suite of further works included the installation of audio visual aids and the replacement of the PA system within the fabric of the building. Ronan Fitzpatrick from Craft Studio Architecture said the big challenge he and the team faced with was to protect the original fabric of the building while carrying out the necessary works.
He added that the heating system concept was based on heating people while they were in the building, and allowing the radiators to do the rest. "There are incredibly beautiful stained glass windows in the Cathedral. The original stained glass windows are by George Collie.
"But in the main body of the Church there are six Harry Clarke studio windows which are incredibly beautiful. They have been fitted with external protection but nothing else was done to them," said Mr Fitzpatrick.
