Speed limits on almost 5,000 kms of rural local roads across Cavan and Monaghan are reduced from today. 2,155 km of local roads in County Monaghan and 2,500 of rural local roads in County Cavan have been reduced with default speed limits on them down from 80km per hour to 60.
The meaning of the rural speed limit sign - a white circle with five diagonal black lines - will change from 80km/h to 60km/h as well. Local authorities across the country are in charge of changing road signage to accompany the new changes.
Northern Sound listeners have been reporting this morning that while new 60km/hr signs are erected and in use on some roads, on others black plastic covers new signs and others haven't been changed at all. However, the advice is that the new speed limits come into effect today, 7th February with An Garda Síochána in charge of enforcing the new rules.
