"There are still too many areas lacking up to date broadband infrastructure." That's the view of local councillor Aine Smith who raised the matter at the most recent sitting of Cavan County Council. The motion she brought before elected members was that as a council we should appeal to the Minister for Communications to ask all
the telecom providers to literally speed up the rollout of infrastructure. The local Councillor highlighted that it is essential for homes, for farmers, for schools, businesses and community and voluntary organisations, adding that a lot of day to day activity depends on the use of the internet.
The Fianna Fail Councillor said she fully acknowledges that good progress has been made over the last two to three years but there are still areas where modern broadband infrastructure will not be provided for a considerable length of time. Cllr Smith said no area or community should be disadvantaged by the lack of this modern infrastructure.
"Good progress has been made over that last few years and I want to acknowledge that," said Cllr Smith. "But unfortunately, there's just too long of a wait for some households when it comes to the roll-out of the national broadband plan. I asked on Cavan County Council to call on the Minister for Communications to see if the process can be rolled-out quicker because it's unfair when you see in some cases that broadband goes so far to a pole down a road while the next pole it won't be brought to for maybe another two years. It just seems ridiculous to me that it can't all be done in the one go when they're so close together."
