A Cavan councillor has raised his concerns over what he believes are "limited" opening hours across a number of local libraries. At yesterday's meeting of the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Fay asked as why libraries in areas such as Belturbet and Ballyconnell were only open on a one-day-a-week basis.
He says there's a need now - more than ever before - to utilise library spaces and encourage people to read books. Cllr Fay also pointed out that local schools hold 'library day' regularly and the limited opening hours in some branches is negatively impacting the initiative.
He added that the library infrastructure and service across Co Cavan was modern, state of the art, and excellent. "Ballyconnell, Belturbet and Ballyjamesduff are the only three libraries in the county that are open just one day a week.
"As far as I'm aware, all the rest of the libraries are open three to five days. Belturbet is open on Tuesday and Ballyconnell is open on Thursday, I do know that," said Cllr Fay.
