A local councillor has raised his concerns over the standard of certain water supplies across Monaghan town. Earlier this week Uisce Éireann, issued a 'do not consume notice' for a number of areas in Monaghan town due to elevated levels of manganese detected in the public water supply.
Sinn Fein's Sean Conlon believes there has been "underinvestment" within the local water infrastructure over many decades and this latest do not consume notice is an example of that. Cllr Conlon also criticised Uisce Éireann's website which he says is causing "genuine concern" among locals who are receiving incorrect information about their water supply.
Speaking to Shannon Northern Sound, the local representative is calling on Uisce Éireann to urgently rectify these issues for the benefit of those affected.
"Unfortunately as we know there has been quite an underinvestment in our water infrastructure over many decades, and this is an example of that," Cllr Conlon explained. "There is an immediacy to this issue and I am calling on Uisce Éireann through our Council Executive to immediately get to work in replacing these cast iron pipes which are causing this problem."
The current notice applies to approximately 1,000 customers in the following areas including: Derry Road, Armagh Road and Tullyhirm Townland. Meanwhile, tankered water is currently available at the car park in front of Grahams of Monaghan at the Coolshannagh Roundabout. Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.
