The Sinn Fein representative has called for the flags to be removed urgently.

A Fermanagh councillor has expressed his concerns in relation to a number of sectarian flags which have been erected in a cross-community area of Enniskillen.

According to Sinn Fein's Dermot Browne, flags symbolising the UVF were recently erected in the Chanterhill area to "intimidate" nationalists living in the area as the 12th of July approaches.

The local representative believes such actions are a "direct attempt" to increase tensions during this sensitive time and to break down vital cross-community relations.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Browne believes that such behaviour does "nothing" for the Enniskillen area as a whole, particularly in relation to tourism.

As a result, he has called on people from both sides of the community to refrain from sectarian behaviour of any kind. Whilst the PSNI has been notified of this incident, Cllr Browne added, "It's a mixed area where there is obviously going to be people annoyed by these flags, so I would just ask people to refrain from this activity.

"It looks bad around the town, we've plenty of people coming across the border from the South to shop and they must feel intimidated as well. It's definitely something that we want to see less of, we want to see communities working together in good community spirit and this is something that works against that in my opinion."
