Gardaí in Cavan are advising members of the public to be "vigilant" in relation to cold-callers. The warning was issued after a man, pretending to be a Garda officer, approached the home of an elderly couple in the Mountnugent area.
Yesterday, at around 11:15am a male called to the home of an elderly couple in the Mountprospect area of Mountnugent. This male was impersonating a plainclothes Garda and asked the home owners if they had lost any money with the intention of the home owner going to check their cash.
Thankfully, the male did not gain access to the house and left the scene with an accomplice in a beige coloured car. Gardaí in Cavan are appealing to anyone who was in the area at that time and noticed anything suspicious or who has dash cam footage to contact them.
Local Gardaí have also appealed to members of the public to never open a door to anyone before you have confirmed who they are and what they want, even if this means ringing them to confirm they are who they say they are.
Gardaí are also asking the public to be vigilant and keep an eye on family, neighbours and friends who may be targeted by these criminals, and to always report suspicious persons or vehicles to your local Garda Station immediately.
