A complete ban on the sale, breeding, rehoming and importing of XL bully dogs from October has officially been announced.
New restrictions on those who already have such dogs will come into place from next February, whereby owners will have to get their dog microchipped and neutered.
It's in response to a spike in attacks by XL bullies, including the death of Nicole Morey in Limerick last month. Rural Development Minister Heather Humphreys says she has to consider the safety of the public from such dangerous breeds.
From October 1st, the breeding, rehoming, reselling and importing of the dangerous dogs will be banned completely. Those already with the breed will require their dogs to be microchipped and neutered by February 2025. The local minister is announcing the ban in the interest of public safety following a number of recent horrific attacks by XL Bullies.
