Over €1 million was paid out in compensation by local county councils for public liability claims last year.
According to the Irish Independent, the vast majority of claims related to slips and falls on footpaths.
Overall, the amount paid out in compensation increased by 15.7% to €54 million between 2022 and 2023. Data published in the Irish Independent shows the number of public liability claims increased by over 30% in that 12 month period.
In Cavan, 120 claims were made, with over €570,000 paid out in compensation. While in Monaghan, 98 claims were made, the vast majority relating to trips and falls on footpaths. The total amount paid in compensation in Monaghan was €612,893. The area with the most amount paid out was Dublin City with over €19 million used to settle claims
