Locals in the wider Ballyjamesduff area are in shock after Kathleen and Michael Lynch were killed in a house fire in Lackenmore in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The bodies of the mother in her 80s and her son in his 50s were taken to the mortuary at Cavan General Hospital.
The blaze broke out in the house located at Lackenmore - a rural area between and New Inns.
Tributes have been paid to both Kathleen and Michael following the terrible tragedy, and impact of their death have been felt far and wide throughout the area. Due to the tragic circumstances, the Castlerahan GAA and Crosserlough Kiernan's Service Station Senior Football tie that was scheduled to take place yesterday was called off.
Castlerahan GAA posted a tribute on social media to Kathleen and Michael who were both involved with the club. "As a club and community we woke up yesterday to the awful news about the death of Kathleen and Michael Lynch. A family steeped in our club and community with Kathleen having four grandsons on the winning Intermediate team last year and a granddaughter on the ladies team that won the Intermediate Championship also," the post read.
It added that "Michael was a great supporter, a constant at every Castlerahan game and rarely missed a match. Local Fine Gael Councillor Trevor Smith was one of the first people on the scene on the fatal fire and paid tribute to both adding that her soup after the annual Christmas swim at Lacken Lake is famous across the area.
Cllr Smith is among the locals saddened by the news and speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier he thanked the emergency services for their quick response. The scene of the fire was preserved yesterday for a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau and inquiries are ongoing.
