A Community CCTV Steering Group is being established in Monaghan despite delays to its rollout due to Covid 19.
It had been hoped that the system would be up and running by the summer in Monaghan Town however the pandemic has stalled this.
The outbreak of Covid-19 has had an impact on the rollout of CCTV across the county in Monaghan.
In Monaghan Town new GDPR regulations meant that the original Community CCTV plan had to be redesigned and resulted in new recommendations for over 30 cameras to be installed in the area.
The council had to re-submit their application for review by the National Advisory Group at Garda Headquarters as a 'new application'.
It had been hoped that the system would be approved and functional by summer, however, due to Covid-19 the National Advisory Group has not met this year to consider new applications.
Elsewhere, Castleblayney's application is still also awaiting approval from Dublin, while the design of the Carrickmacross CCTV system, which was expected to be finalised recently, has also been delayed by the pandemic.
Despite this Monaghan County Council has proceeded to establish a Steering Committee for the scheme, which will monitor the effectiveness of the schemes, ensure the correct management and operation of cameras, and consider any upgrades or new installations, among other responsibilities.
At a recent Joint Policing Committee members put forward names for the steering group.
Councillor Brian McKenna was proposed as chair, with councillors Noel Keelan, Aidan Campbell, and Hughie McElvaney, also proposed to sit on the committee.
The names of Edele Fitzsimon and Siobhan McKenna were also put forward as community centre representatives.
The rest of the committee will comprise of members of the county council and An Garda Siochána.
An official decision will be made at the next meeting of the Monaghan JPC.
