Cavan man Joshua Hennessy is offering his advice to local students who are unsure about what to do when leaving school. The 19-year-old from Virginia is now approaching the end of year one of a two-year national accounting technician programme which will create 150 positions this year.
Joshua says it's important for young people to know that going to college full-time is "not for everyone" and that there are alternative options out there. According to the Virginia native, zero education costs through his chosen apprenticeship has alleviated any financial concerns.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Joshua says this has allowed him to instead focus on his studies and work to the very best of his ability.
Through his accounting programme, Joshua says he has gained "real life" experience of working with clients and dealing with corporate situations, something he wouldn't have had the exposure to by going down the traditional route.
While Joshua believes there are still outside pressures in society for young people to go down the traditional route of college, he has advised students to focus on what suits them best and more importantly what makes them happy.
"It’s important to shine a light on the different options out there as opposed to the traditional route of college, which can be a very daunting thought for many," he explained
"The accounting programme has given me the opportunity to put my studies into first-hand practice and real life scenarios and I think it's important to remind young people that no matter what, it's important to try everything and give everything your best shot without fear, worry or stress holding you back."
