An advisory has been issued for widespread frost and ice.

The new year is off to a chilly start, with a nationwide status yellow low temperature and ice warning in place from this evening.

It'll come into effect from 6pm until 11am tomorrow however, the cold weather is expected to continue into the weekend. An advisory has been issued for widespread frost and ice, with sleet and snow potentially on the cards for some areas on Saturday.

Significant accumulations of snow are likely in some places. The advisory comes into effect at 12 midnight on Saturday to 12 midnight on Monday.

Forecaster with Met Éireann, Brandon Creagh, says temperatures are expected to drop and remain low over the next week.
