Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District Councillor, John Paul Feeley has called on the Council Executive to ensure that Coillte are held responsible for recent damage done to a road in Drumbar.
The Fianna Fáil Councillor said it was "ironic" that when Coillte hauled stone to build a new road, a bridge was broken down and drains blocked on the L-road. When the road had to be temporarily closed as a result; local people were inconvenienced, Councillor Feeley also pointed out. While he thanked council staff for the work they completed to re-open the road, Councillor Feeley said Coillte must be held to account for the damage caused and pay for it under the "polluter must pay" principle. The money should not, he added, be taken from the council's "already inadequate road budget".
"I want to see the local road in Drumbar repaired promptly, properly and as soon as possible," he told Northern Sound, "and I know the council are anxious to do so. Obviously, it's going to cause inconvenience to the local community but, if they see the work being done to a high standard, they will deal with that but, it's also essential given the fact that Coillte are responsible for the damage to the road that they are held accountable for the road and its cost of repair."
