A Co Monaghan nursing home was found to be non-compliant in four areas during a recent unannounced HIQA inspection.
Mullinahinch House Private Nursing Home, which provides 24 hour general nursing care both long and short term needs, was subject to the inspection on the 9th of March.
The nursing home accommodates a maximum of 54 residents.
At the time of the inspection, the centre was emerging from a covid outbreak and 14 residents were COVID-19 positive and in isolation.
The remaining residents were able to move about all areas of the nursing home freely, but a high number decided to remain in their bedroom.
Residents spoken with said they were happy living in the centre and felt well-cared for.
However, the centre was non-compliant regarding governance and management as it "did not have sufficient resources to ensure the effective delivery of care".
The nursing home was also deemed non-compliant regarding staff, as the "number and skill mix of staff was not adequate to meet the needs of the residents present".
The Inspectors also found that the nursing home was short staffed.
For example, on seven different occasions call bells were ringing for a prolonged period of time, going to the emergency ring tone prior to being answered.
The centre was also found to be non-compliant regarding its premises, as a number of twin rooms were not of a suitable size or layout to accommodate two residents.
This also lead a non-compliance regarding residents' rights, because the inspectors deemed that "residents in some twin bedrooms could not maintain their privacy and dignity at all times.
Meanwhile, the ceiling in the upper part of the communal sitting room was leaking and dripping into a bucket placed on the floor.
The centre says an active recruitment drive is ongoing and staffing levels have been reviewed.
There has also been a reduction in the number of twin rooms, and the remaining twin rooms have been amended to create more space.
A compliance plan has since been put in place to become compliant in these areas.
