Initial project approval for the significant expansion of the Cavan Town secondary school was approved recently.

The CMETB Chief Exec says yesterday's approval was a "significant and fundamental juncture".

Almost one year ago, there were concerns that the "Le Cheile" unit at Edenmore National School would be forced to close.

In 2012, CMETB got the land in Cavan town, with the view to create the FET campus.

They succeed the outgoing chair and deputy chair of Sean Fegan and April Anna Barker.

However, the CMETB says “detailed data indicates a declining enrolment for both schools in the coming years”.

The group is opposed to a proposal to merge St Bricin's and St Mogue's secondary schools.

The former army barracks was acquired by the CMETB in March of 2012.
