Five branches in Cavan and Monaghan will close next Friday.

The Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council says the imminent closure of three Bank of Ireland branches across the county is "terrible".

In Co Cavan, branches in Arva, Cootehill, and Kingscourt will close this day next week, with Castleblayney and Clones branches also set to close their doors.

Kingscourt councillor Clifford Kelly says it's wrong that businesses in the town will be left without banking or ATM services and adds that it'll be a "massive blow".

Councillor Kelly says people in Kingscourt will be forced to go to Bailieborough or Carrickmacross for banking services and expressed fear that Kingscourt businesses will lose custom to these towns.

At a recent county council meeting, he passed a motion calling on the Finance Minister and the Public Expenditure Minister to intervene to stop banking services leaving these towns.
