Tragic isn't the word when it came to the announcement made earlier this week by Lakeland Dairies to close its Monaghan Town site.
That's according to Fine Gael Councillor, Sean Gilliland who has been reacting to the news that was revealed on Wednesday evening that Lakeland Dairies plan to close three of its facilities over the next 16 months in order to cut overhead expenses.
Cllr Gilliland said it's a major blow for Monaghan with up 78 jobs impacted by the closures.
The company says they envisage that, following the ending of production in quarter one 2025, a process to sell the Monaghan site will take place, while the milk drying facilities at Lough Egish will close in June 2024.
Cllr Gilliland says it's very much Killshandra's gain and Monaghan's loss.
