"The Government is fully committed to assisting the families and finding the truth of what happened" during the Monaghan bombing. That's according to a Minister of State who was replying to a question put down in the Seanad by a local representative. Last Friday marked the 50th anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, which recorded the biggest loss of life in a single day during the Troubles. Seven local people were killed in Monaghan.
Two reports into Troubles atrocities, including the Monaghan and Dublin Bombings, are due for publication but Senator Robbie Gallagher asked Minister of State at the Department of Health Colm Burke TD 'Where will that leave us'. Minister of State Burke said "the Government will not forget our duty to victims and survivors" and said it is hoped the two upcoming reports which contain never-before-seen information will "provide more answers for all of those affected."
Senator Gallagher reminded the Minister that "to be forgotten is to die twice."
