Peter Conlon has been co-opted onto Monaghan County Council.
It follows a brief ceremony at this month's meeting of elected members this morning.
He fills the vacancy that arose following the resignation of his mother, Cllr Mary Kerr Conlon
Fianna Gael’s Cllr Aidan Campbell said Cllr Conlon was a man who was "very much involved" in the community of Carrickmacross and he looked forward to welcoming him onto the council.
Meanwhile, Cllr David Maxwell said the new local representative had "big shoes to fill" following his mother's political career that spanned over 40 years.
"I would like to thank council members for their warm words," added Cllr Conlon.
"I'm here to fill the enormous shoes of my mother, and like everyone else on this council, I am here for the betterment of communities across Monaghan."
