The Irish horticulture sector faces a "real impact before the end of the summer" from changes to regulations around peat harvesting.
Thousands of local people are employed in horticulture, which includes the mushroom sector, and the Chief Executive of Monaghan Mushrooms, Paul Wilson, says the changes are "unsustainable".
Producers claim new criteria which was introduced last year has forced them to import peat moss from abroad because the alternatives are too expensive.
Paul Wilson says there is "no viable alternative to peat at the moment" and that Ireland shouldn't be placed at a "competitive disadvantage":
