Chair of Cavan IFA says personal pendant alarms should be carried by farm workers

23 people lost their lives on farms in 2020 and 12 were over the age of 65.

The Chair of Cavan IFA says personal pendant alarms should be carried by farm workers.

This comes following the release of data by the HSA showing that the agricultural sector still has one of the highest number of work related deaths with 23 people losing their lives on farms in 2020 and of those, 12 were over 65.

Elizabeth Ormiston, chair of Cavan IFA, had her own farm accident in 2009 and she says it can have a devastating impact on the family, and the viability of the farm.

She says that younger generations shouldn't be on farms and safety measures to prevent children getting on to the farm need to be implemented.

Elizabeth says farmers are often alone when working and that perhaps the use of personal pendant alarms could be a good safety precaution for all ages:
