An event held at Rothaí Mill in County Cavan has scooped a prize at this year's National Heritage Week Awards. The event, which was organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), won the Sustainability and Climate Award.
Entries to this category were judged on their efforts to incorporate environmentally-friendly practices to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the natural world. Rothaí Mill at Drumollard is over 200 years old, has two water wheels each of which is powered by a different water source making it a completely unique feature in all of Ireland. It was thatched until 1959 and stopped operating over 50 years ago, in 1969.
During National Heritage Week, the SPAB ran a course at the mill teaching building professionals, craftspeople and enthusiasts about traditional conservation skills. The awards honour those organisers who created the most engaging and inspiring events and projects
