Tomorrow marks St Brigid's Day and a new bank holiday has been introduced to mark the Saint's significance and contribution to life. On Friday next, the 3rd of February, Cavan Older People's Council in conjunction with Cavan County Council will hold an online Spring Workshop and Celebration of the female patron saint.
Joyce Fitzpatrick will facilitate the event which aims to explore the mythology associated with St Brigid. Joyce told Northern Sound that the much-loved Irish Saint is associated with courage, compassion, kindness and integrity - qualities that are as important today as they were when St Brigid lived during 5th and 6th century Ireland.
She added that holy wells and other symbols including the St Brigid's Cross are all associated with healing. "For a long long time Irish people have made the St Brigid's Cross as a remembrance of her lifting the rushes off the ground to a dying man to tell him about redemption, about Christ.
"The four arms of the cross appear to represent the four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter - which were very strong in St Brigid's memory and tradition. And of course the seasons were very significant in St Brigid's life.
