When it comes to cyber crime, society is reactive rather than proactive.
That's according to Deputy Pauline Tully who asked a recent meeting of the Cavan Joint Policing Committee if it was possible to be better prepared for the situation.
Her comments came as the meeting heard that the more society moves towards cashless payment, the more cyber crime will rise.
Superintendent Alan McGovern said that criminals are becoming very sophisticated online and Gardaí are working with banking institutions and technology companies to find solutions.
But, he warned, it 's very difficult to keep up with the level of criminality that is evident in the digital world.
