A Cavan TD says proposed British immigration laws would "rip through the heart" of cross-border co-operation.
If enacted, the rules would see a visa waiver requirement for non-Irish citizens going between the North and Republic.
The UK's Northern Ireland Secretary has insisted that the system won't lead to checks along the border, and the common travel area won't be affected.
However, Brendan Smith says the law could be disastrous for people who live in Ireland but don't have Irish or British citizenship.
