"Apprenticeships need to become more attractive".
That's according to Cavan Senator, Joe O'Reilly, who was responding to comments this week that traditional University degrees are "a thing of the past".
Senator O'Reilly says there is a serious skills shortage across the region and that's because of the high level of attendance in third level education.
The local Senator says it is important to take the positive aspects of university education when moving forward.
But, he added, there is also a need for more commitment to apprenticeships, upskilling, and training so the Ireland can remain competitive in the global labour market.
