The late Mel Doherty will be remembered for his "extraordinary capacity to entertain".
That's according to Cavan Senator Joe O'Reilly who extended his sympathies to the family of the popular Cavan man following his death this week.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator O'Reilly recalled the contribution Mr Doherty made to the pantomime scene in Cavan over the years, describing him as a "great comedian" and a "massively talented individual" who brought so much joy to many.
He also described Mr Doherty as a "great family man" adding that his talents in both the business and entertainment arenas have carried through to the next generation.
Senator O'Reilly added that Mel Doherty's talent was "boundless" and there was no doubt but that his memory would live on.
"His talent was boundless and he had a very wide ranging set of talents. I believe that his memory will live on. There is widespread sadness and widespread grief over the passing of what was truly a great man . His memory will live on and he will live on in the hearts and minds of people. Every time people think of him right into the future, it will be with a smile."
The funeral mass of the late Mel Doherty took place on Thursday at the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Felim with burial afterwards in the family plot in Killygarry Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Rosaleen, daughter Anita; sons Neil, Mel, Joseph and Philip; extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
