A Cavan school has been announced in the pilot programme for a brand new leaving cert subject.
Breifne College in Cavan will be part of the first cohort of schools nationally to offer Climate Action and Sustainable Development for the 2025/26 academic year. According to the Department of Education, the new subject will engage students with sustainability issues such as the climate crisis, developing students capacity for informed and meaningful action. Teachers in the selected schools will begin working with Oide, the teacher support service, this school year, a year in advance of teaching the subject.
This new subject is part of a major revamp of the leaving cert in which new subjects and continuous assessment are being introduced to more subjects.
