Funding for the upkeep of roads in Cavan is nowhere near sufficient.
That's the view of Mountnugent based councillor, Noel Connell, who raised the issue at the most recent meeting of Cavan County Council. Elected members heard motor tax receipts for 2023 totalled three million euro for the county, and roads were de-prioritised due to lack of funding. Cllr Connell asked the council to write to Government to seek additional funding of €12 million euro for upkeep of roads in the county.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he says the state of some roads is having a detrimental impact on people's daily lives
"I know one man in particular who does an awful lot of charity work. He brings people to hospital and he's telling me that a set of tyres only last him a couple of months because when he drives into the potholes, the wire cracks in the tyres and it's causing punctures. He can't pull up on the side of the road if he's rushing to a hospital with someone for chemotherapy or something else. He cannot come along and be sitting on the side of the road waiting for someone to come a change a wheel for him. This has to be sorted out ASAP".
