The second anniversary of the war in Ukraine will be marked in Cavan this weekend with a special prayer event. Chairperson of the Association of Ukrainians Living in Ireland, Sergiy Balan, says the aim of the special evening is to pray for all those "suffering in the war".
The evening of prayer also includes performances from Ukrainian and Irish artists including Don Mescal and takes place in the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim in Cavan, this Saturday, 24th February from 4:30pm.
Sergiy, who has been living in Cavan for over 20 years, said there is now approximately 2,000 Ukrainians living in the county. The prayer event is also a way for those people to "thank this country for what they given to us", he said.
"We will have prayers for the soldiers who have died and are continuing to die and the people who are dying and suffering in the war," Sergiy told the Joe Finnegan Show, "and we will pray for Ukrainian people and also, it is about gratitude for the Irish people who have given second homes to Ukrainians fleeing from the war and then, we also want to say 'thank you' to this country."
