When he's not raring calves on his Cavan farm, you can find Gerry Lynch 41,000 feet in the sky flying an aeroplane for Ryanair. Aside from his professional career as a pilot, Mr Lynch along with his wife and children rear over 30 dairy beef calves each year on their Clonkeiffy farm close to the Cavan-Meath border.
Having started his career in aviation as an apprentice mechanic, Mr Lynch fulfilled a lifelong dream of his by joining Ryanair back in 2005.
While the Cavan pilot enjoys the farming lifestyle, he told today's Joe Finnegan Show that he is aware of the concerns within the sector. He added that while he does see a "future" in the farming industry, economically, farmers are making less money now, despite an increase in workload.
"It's less money for more work, these days," Mr Lynch explained. "Going forward for the likes of us and probably all part-time famers, farming will be nothing more than a hobby, albeit an expensive one."
