Cavan Pétanque players featured in not just one but two national TV programmes recently. First, members of the Cavan Pétanque Club were featured on the popular One Show on BBC TV then, some played for RTÉ's Nationwide programme on Monday last. The Cavan team members joined teams in Belfast for a day's filming with French maitre d' Fred Siriex, of First Dates fame. For Nationwide, the TV crew filmed members play at the Cavan Men's Shed.
Pétanque is the French sport you've probably never heard of, which is growing in popularity across Ireland by the week. Based on the game of boules, players aged from four to 94 can take part by throwing a steel ball on an outdoor piste. Cavan Pétanque Club,which is based in Belturbet Golf Club, are current All-Ireland champions and they recently bid to host the 2026 Celtic Cup competition.
