Cavan mother appeals for people not to suffer in silence

Bernie Smith from Stradone says talking about your problems should always be the fore.

A Co Cavan woman who lost her son to suicide 10 years ago this week is reminding people who feel they need help to reach out.

Bernie Smith from Stradone says talking about your problems should always be the fore and for family members or friends of someone that may be suffering to have that conversation.

She says people suffering with their mental health need to feel like they are not on their own. Bernie's beloved son Patrick died by suicide on September 9th 2014.

She has been telling me about him and her experience as a family feeling alone highlighting a lack of services and resources. The Co Cavan mother says she and her family felt very much on their own and for her really shone a light on the lack of services in the region.

Bernie says time of the year can be very difficult for the family adding that she thinks of Patrick every single day. The Co Cavan woman is urging people to have the conversations that need to be had.
