A Cavan-Monaghan TD says the current migration system doesn't work for anybody. Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy has accused the Government of creating "a mess of a system" that antagonises communities. He says that there is little to no engagement with local communities and the location of IPAS centres is set by a small number of individuals who have become multi-millionaires on the back of the system.
The Sinn Féin rep claims his party would establish a new Immigration Management Agency to address the failings that have been overseen by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Matt Carthy pointed out that, if elected, Sinn Féin would not put new IPAS centres in communities that are already under severe pressure and they would only be put in more affluent areas which have the capacity and where the services exist to support them. Concluding, Deputy Carthy says the plan would ensure ensure fairness for local communities, decency and compassion for those fleeing persecution, and also command public support.
