The Cavan-Monaghan Education and Training Board annual careers fair is just winding up for this year. A representative from CMETB said the goal of the event is to "help students explore a wide range of academic and career opportunities" .
Today, pupils from Cavan and Monaghan secondary schools attended the fair at the Slieve Russelll Hotel to learn more about their future options. Organisations from the Credit Union to the Irish Army had stalls at the event where representatives could talk one-to-one with pupils who wanted information about career opportunities. Pupils have had the chance to try out a tractor simulator, courtesy of Ballyhaise Agricultural College and partly funded by the Department of Agriculture, when they could try their hand at operating large machinery like a teleporter, 360 excavator or combine, from the safety of behind a screen.
Sonia Hoey, Careers Guidance Counsellor with Cavan Institute told our reporter about some of the ways in which new qualifications and contacts made with third level institutions will open doors for local students. "Our courses are really diverse, there's something for everyone," Ms Hoey said, "Our students would complete their QQI level 5 and then have the option of progressing to a levl 6 qualification but, more often than not, they would use their level 5 award to progress to a university or an institute of technology, now known as technological universities and we are advancing progression in terms of links with UK colleges," the careers fait contributor said.
