Cavan-Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher is calling for a €20 per week increase in the state pension. He makes the case on behalf of the elderly, who the Senator said are the people "who looked after us all up until now".
Although inflation has come down slightly, energy bills are slow to follow, and still remain high for many pensioners, he said.
Senator Gallagher argues that the elderly are the section of society who use and need heating the most, so should be given more financial support to meet higher costs: "Many of our old people who have worked all their lives, who've contributed to the state coffers all their lives, unfortunately, they're not that mobile and from now on will require heat to be on in their house a lot of the time so, there are additional costs for those people," Senator Gallagher said, "We have an economy that thankfully is performing very well but, an economy is there to service people and look after those who have looked after us all up to this point on time," he added.
