"For the development of our region we need more infrastructure." That's according to Senator Pauline O'Reilly who has indicated her intention to vie for a seat in the Midlands North-West constituency in next year's EU elections.
Senator O'Reilly was speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show in relation to her thoughts on the proposed All-Island Strategic Rail Review.
The review was undertaken in co-operation with the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland and published earlier this week.
Amongst its recommendations is the hope that a railway line will be developed by government to boost connectivity in the North-West and Midlands region.
Senator O'Reilly highlighted how railways, particularly in the likes of Cavan and Monaghan have been closed since as early as the 30s.
She added that this proposal comes at an "opportune time" as the people of Cavan and Monaghan care "just as much" about climate change than those in urban areas, and that it is important to give "everyone the opportunity" to use an alternative mode of transport if they wish to.
"Nobody is saying that we're not getting roads," she explained. "We are saying that we have to prioritise and see where are these absolutely needed and if we are to give people alternatives you need a voice for those alternatives and I do think people want that."
