Gardaí are anxious to speak to anyone in the Carrickmacross area with information about the matter. Meanwhile, Gardaí are issuing advice on home and car safety as the dark evenings approach.
Seargent Mick Duffy told Shannonside Northern Sound that home owners should consider their options as opportunistic burglars take advantage of the dark evenings. He is advising people to put a light on a timer switch so as to give the impression there is someone home.
He also says that it's important to lock and secure doors and windows, and if homeowners have an alarm, ensure it is serviced and in working order. Seargent Duffy is also advising homeowners not to keep cash in the house, and high value items like jewellery should be photographed and kept in a safe and secure location.
Garda Tracey Donohoe, meanwhile, says there has been a noted increase across Co Monaghan in thefts from cars. She added that owners should lock their cars at night and never leave anything valuable in them. "Over recent months there have been a number of thefts from cars in various parts of Co Monaghan.," she continued.
"These thefts can sometimes take place in car parks in rural areas but we have also seen cases where cars have been broken into outside homes where they are parked in driveways or along the street. We would like to highlight the importance of locking your car at night and never leaving anything valuable in your car."
