Employers across Cavan and Monaghan are being encouraged to support those living with a disability or illness into the workforce.
Established in 2001, EmployAbility Monaghan & Cavan is a supported employment service for people with any long term medical condition, illness, injury or disability. The group is part of a network of 24 supported employment companies nationally and contracted by the Department of Social Protection. Angie McKenna is the Service Manager for EmployAbility Monaghan & Cavan. Speaking to Northern Sound, Angie said that the aim of the service is to source employment for people with a disability, mental health difficulties, injury or illness.
She also highlighted the important role that local businesses can play in promoting social inclusion within the community: "We would have clients in jobs for 15 or 16 years and loving their work," Angie told Northern Sound, "That's the big things for us: the sustainability of it. Not just putting someone into a job for six months and leaving it. It's about trying to match clients with the right job so that they love where they are and they feel that they're contributing something. It's no different from any other job. We all like that. We like to think that we're contributing and we're valuable to our employer."
