A Cavan microbiologist says he's encouraged by news of Pfizer's new Covid-19 pill.
The pharmaceutical giant says its new anti-viral tablet is 89 per cent effective against serious illness and death.
Over 1,200 people took part in the clinical trial and no one who received the Pfizer treatment died, compared with 12 deaths among placebo recipients.
The medicine was taken every 12 hours for five days once participants started to experience early symptoms of covid.
Dr Cathal Collins is a microbiologist at Cavan-Monaghan Hospital and says the success of this pill, and vaccine equity around the world would help the global fight against Covid-19.
He says the pills could be very important.
