The Labour party will be holding a selection convention for a local election candidate in the Cavan-Belturbet area at 7:30pm tonight at the Farnham Arms Hotel, Cavan Town. There will be one candidate nominated on the night, Liam van der Spek who ran in the last local elections and also ran in the last general elections in 2020.
Former Cavan town Cllr Des Cullen will chair the planned meeting. Speaking to Northern Sound, Liam made note of his performance in 2020, gaining 600 votes in the local election and 1,000 votes in the general election. Mr van der Spek believes it is "entriely possible" for Labour to have a presence in the Cavan area, particularly going on the votes he received in the previous election. The Cavan native highlighted his hope of becoming a "voice" for local people, with a number of key focuses already on his agenda. "I think that there's been a lack of focus, particularly in urban centres in places like Cavan, and I think this would be an area of focus for me," he explained.
