Paul Brady from Cavan who won an unprecedented sixth World Handball Championship title yesterday has revealed how he never intended to enter this year's competition. The Mullahoran sportsman got the better of Diarmaid Nash of Clare in a tight game which went to a tiebreaker at the National Handball Centre in Croke Park.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, the 45-year-old, said "heartache" in the All-Ireland Finals earlier this year due to injury meant he bowed out of competitive sport. Following a hiatus during which he "put on a bit of weight" and realised he missed the game, Paul took up handball again for recreation only. Some time into his return to play, the Mullahoran teacher thought he might just be able to compete at the highest level again. He joked how he put his name forward for the Worlds to "redeem" himself following this year's earlier disappointment.
